Sledging, Superheroes, and Snow Fails: The Snowy Adventure You Didn’t Know You Needed

Today, I did a thing—a thing that, in all honesty, I didn’t really want to do. But because of this delightful little blog (hi there, bloggy!), I’ve committed to saying “yes” more often. So, in the spirit of adventure, and perhaps a touch of peer pressure from my eldest, I found myself agreeing to go sledging. Yes, sledging. Me, the person who’d rather hibernate indoors in a blanket burrito with a cup of coffee than face the frosty outdoors. Cue a voice note to my friend: “Why did I start this blog again? And why does it require me to go out in the cold flipping sledging? Stupid flipping blog” (or something to that effect with maybe slightly more words and ranting…)

The Reluctant Sledge Queen

The eldest had his heart set on sledging, and like any good parent, I did what any responsible adult would do—I dragged the youngest along too, because if I’m freezing, everyone’s freezing! Now, we live near plenty of hills, many many hills in fact , but thanks to some ancient sledging expedition when the snow barely dusted the ground, we are now obligated to revisit the local golf course with its “super hills” every time it snows.

Even when the snow is deep enough to bury a baby elephant.

Even when it is arctic conditions.

Even when it is a 20 minute walk when the snow isnt 300 feet deep and the roads and paths aren’t d icy.

And the forecast predicts rain.

Because hey, memories, right?

Despite my initial reluctance, I have to admit—it was actually quite fun. What a spontaneous little adventure it turned out to be! We slid, we laughed, and we embraced the winter wonderland.

However, here’s a sledging fact I wasn’t prepared for:

apparently, snow can be too deep to sledge properly.

Who knew? Not me, obviously.

The sledges didn’t quite glide as gracefully or as quickly as one might hope. In fact, they kinda slid in to the snow rather than over.

But still, we had a blast.

A Missed Superhero Moment

Now, let’s talk about the surprising number of cars on the icy, slushy backroads. Crazy people being out in this I tell ya!

Side note; my youngest did point out we were also out in these conditions but that’s not the point!

One car seemed stuck, and the superhero within me thought,

“This is my moment!”

I approached, ready to assist, and in true British fashion, mimed my offer to help with a mix of charades and over exaggerated mouth miming.

They declined.

Honestly, it was a bit of a letdown. How good would that have been in my blog.

Ahem.

I spent the next ten minutes scanning the horizon for another damsel in distress but alas, no one else needed saving.

Side note; I googled male alternative for damsel and it can jog on if it thinks I’m adding that to my bloggy!

Ice Cream Over Heroics

On our way home, because nothing says post-snow adventure like ice cream, we stopped by the Co-op. As we exited, ice cream in hand, we spotted another car struggling. “Here’s my chance!” I thought.

But then, my inner superhero decided to prioritise ice cream and a cozy movie under blankets over roadside heroics. So, with a shrug and a grin (also know as pretending to not notice), we made our way home.

The Great Sledging Fiasco: A Comedy of Errors

Now, before we wrap up this chilly escapade, let me regale (oo er, doesn’t that sound posh?!) you with the masterpiece that was my attempt at sledging. ‘Cos. Why not?!

Picture this: my eldest, in a moment of sheer brilliance, convinced me that a video of me gracefully sledging down the hill would be just the thing to elevate this blog. Naturally, I agreed, thinking how hard could it be? Famous last words. So, I handed over my phone, and off I went. But instead of taking the logical path around the hill like a normal person, I decided to channel my inner mountain goat and climb straight up.

Because why not?

Turns out, there are many reasons why not.

The hill, covered in fresh, fluffy snow, quickly became my arch-nemesis. And I was not going down without a fight! First attempt: I slipped.

Second attempt: I slid.

Third attempt: I rolled—downwards, not upwards. In fact, I rolled so far, I ended up right back at the bottom where I started because, not gonna lie, it was easier to embrace the roll than fight it, much to my eldest’s delight. He filmed every second with a gleeful grin, fully capturing my less-than-graceful ascent. After what felt like an epic battle between me and gravity (spoiler: gravity won), I finally conquered the summit. Breathless but triumphant, I prepared for my grand descent.

This was my moment.

I launched myself onto the sledge, ready to gracefully soar…

and, well, I screamed. Not from excitement, but from sheer terror as the sledge sped, lurched, slowed, and then came to a complete stop about three feet from where I started.

Marvellous

Cue my son’s uncontrollable laughter. He proudly announced he had captured every second of my heroic journey, leaving me with a less than glamorous video that may or may not make it to social media for your viewing pleasure.

A Toast to Misadventures

So here we are, back home in my blanket burrito where I belong.  hibernating once more with a cup of coffee, an ice cream, and a story that will undoubtedly be retold at gatherings for years to come. Yay(!)

However, If today taught me anything (other than snow can be too deep to sledge in), it’s that the best memories often come from the moments when things go hilariously wrong. When you just say ‘fook it’ and roll with it (even if it is down a snowy hill)

Actual footage of my falling…

Whether you’re tackling a snowy mountain or just trying something new, embrace the chaos and laugh along the way. We might as well! Oh, and speaking of sledging stories that live on forever—let’s just say this wasn’t my first sledging adventure that’s become legendary among my friends. The last time I hit the slopes, the mishaps were so epic, my kids were still laughing about it on our way there today. But that’s a story for another time! Here’s to more spontaneous, slightly absurd adventures in 2025! Until next time, stay sparkly and keep saying yes to life’s wonderfully ridiculous moments.

Toodle pip for now!
